The Department of English and Philosophy's annual Delta Symposium, is scheduled
for April 17-20, 2013. It features internationally known scholars and musicians
who will gather at Arkansas State University's campus in Jonesboro. In its 19th
year, the symposium theme for 2013 is "Cultivating the Delta." As the title
suggests, Delta Symposium XIX will appeal to scholars, students, and residents
throughout the region who are interested in various musical traditions,
photography, and film linked to the symposium's focus, as well as to agriculture
and its effects on the environment, throughout the Lower Mississippi River
Delta. This year's featured participants include Bruce Jackson, Wes Jackson,
and Julia "Butterfly" Hill as guest speakers and featured literary events by
writers W. Stuart Towns, Janis Kearney, and Philip McMath, and Margaret
Bolsterli. The event culminates on Saturday April 20th with an architectural
walking tour scheduled for 10:00 am that departs from the Craighead County
Jonesboro Public Library and the Roots Music Festival that begins at noon at
City Water and Light Park. Featured acts include 2-Mule Plow, Cedric Burnside,
and the New Agrarians.
