Extended deadline 1 May for the International Ballad Conference, Kosovo, 31 Aug-4 Sept, 2015
CALL FOR PAPERS
45th International Ballad Conference of the Commission für Volksdichtung
31 August – 4 September 2015
Prishtina, KOSOVO
The Institute of Albanology in Prishtina Invites submissions for papers for the 45th International Ballad Conference of the Kommission für Volksdichtung
The 45th International Ballad Conference will be held in Prishtina (also spelled Pristina), from August 31st to September 4th, 2015. Prishtina is the capital city of Kosovo. The city is home to the University of Prishtina and is served by the Prishtina International Airport. During the Roman period Prishtina was part of the Illyrian province of Dardania, and Ulpiana - a discovered ancient settlement nearby the city with still existing ruins from Early Neolithic of the 8th century BC - was considered one of the most important Roman cities in the Balkans. On the foundations of this heritage were later layered Eastern and Western cultures, which can be easily noticed even in present times. Prishtina people are recognized for their hospitality and religious tolerance.
Kosovo, located in the center of Balkan Peninsula, is the newest state in Europe, which declared its independence in 2008. Despite this novelty, by having such geographical position historically, Kosovo was a crossroad of multicultural contacts resulting both in great periods of harmony and cultural exchange as well as hard periods of conflicts and disputes. Certainly, all this was reflected in the everyday life of Kosovo population as well as in their cultural production including folklore as an expressive genre. Despite, if not because of, its turbulent history, development of Kosovo as an industrial place was and still is quite slow, thus as a result of predominant traditional way of life  some old oral genres, such as ballads and epic songs still continue to be performed by some active rhapsodists.
Conference theme
“Parallel worlds in ballad and folk songs”
Major social and political movements and changes suffered in this region throughout history (including the last war of 1999) have very often: put the life in border to death; faced cultural influences of the Orient and the Occident; combined tradition and modernity; love and hate; fear and courage, fantasy and reality etc. As a result, in many folk creations, as a reflection of such a life full of contradictions and tensions, we find parallel lines of “other”, of “another world”, or maybe “another dimension” that coexist, often in interactive relations. As such, parallel worlds continue to be integral part of our spiritual world, our orality; to be present in our folklore and traditions, in our ballads and folk songs.
Not always as in another dimension, beyond our world/out and far from us, but more as an aspect of parallel world coexistence, we invite you in our Conference, where you could elaborate themes that have to do with parallel worlds in your ballads and folk songs, while focusing on the topics below. We also welcome papers on other aspects of ballad and folk song studies.
