CULTURAL KNOWLEDGE IN A CHANGING WORLD – RESEARCH, TEACHING, AND CULTURAL ENCOUNTERS

XI Ethnology days 26.–27.3.2020 Jyväskylä, Finland

At the XI Ethnology days we ask what is the role and place of cultural knowledge in a changing world? How do we teach, apply and use Ethnology and how do researchers participate in societal affairs? Today Ethnology as a discipline is often combined with other Cultural Studies and taught as a part of multidisciplinary degree programmes. Therefore, it is important to discuss the epistemological and methodological topics, and how they are used and developed in multidisciplinary environments. We invite researchers and teachers from the fields of cultural research as well as experts from museums, businesses, and third sector organizations to discuss contemporary challenges. We offer a multidisciplinary platform for both academic and experimental working groups.

Keynote speakers are Professor Sarah Pink (Monash University, Australia), Associate Professor Robert Willim (Lund University), Head of Community Engagement, PhD, Minna Ruohonen (University College London), and project researcher, Sanna Vierimaa (University of Jyväskylä).

We welcome session proposals and individual papers in Finnish, Swedish or English. We also invite proposals for experimental working groups with practical orientation. Themes may cover issues related to teaching, research, applied methodologies and experiments: How can we gain expertise in cultural research? What kind of role national and international collaboration have within Ethnology? What kinds of challenges collaboration with public sector or NGOs may pose for current methods and research practices? What kind of methodological changes and new 'ways of doing' are in the air and how can research results be communicated in the future?

Please submit your paper or session proposal (max 250 words abstract) to ethnologydays2020@gmail.com by November 30th, 2019. We will inform about acceptance by December 15th, 2019. You may propose a workshop or panel and let us arrange the participants from the abstract proposals we receive by the deadline. You can also see the already proposed workshops and panels on the event webpage by November 24th, and apply to them!

The XI Ethnology Days are organized by The Society of Finnish Ethnologists, Ethnos ry in collaboration with the Cultures, Communities and Change degree programme (KUMU) of the University of Jyväskylä.
