CIELab "The Participatory Image"

Dear colleagues

under the title “The Participatory Image”, we are currently seeking  chapter proposals for a publication that connects the fields of visual  communication and anthropology as they merge into an interdisciplinary format (particularly focusing  on visualization in urban planning).

The publication reflects on participatory aspects of images from  different perspectives. The context of our research is urban  envisioning. From a variety of fields, we invite scholars who are concerned with  participatory aspects of images in the following three areas:

The Creation of Participatory Images

How do participatory images emerge in the group setting of a workshop  or in a studio which specializes in visualizations of urban space?

The main focus of this section is on the process of creating  participatory images in a workshop setting and multiple authorship.

The Form of Participatory Images

What do participatory images look like and what are the formal  characteristics of images which foster a dialogue and mutual  understanding?

In this section, the focus is on the material and formal  characteristics that images require in order to support participatory  processes.

The Agency of Participatory Images

How do participatory images act or what is the effect of their agency  in a process of negotiating various versions of an urban future?

The aim of this section is to shed light on the processes in which  images unfold their agency through entanglements with material and  immaterial environments.
