CFP: "Slavery, Race, and Empire in Europe and the World," New York State Association of European Historians Annual Conference, Niagara Falls, NY, Oct 7-8, Call for Papers, July 1, 2022 New York, United States

 

The 72nd annual meeting of the New York State Association of European Historians (NYSAEH) will be held in Niagara Falls, NY on October 7-8, 2022, hosted by Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center and Niagara University, with funding from a generous AHA-NEH SHARP grant.  The theme of this year's conference is "Slavery, Race, and Empire in Europe and the World."  Participants are encouraged to explore the connections between the history of Europe, the world, and Western New York in new, engaging, and public-facing ways.  

The association enourages submissions addressing this year's theme or any aspect of European history or Europe's connections with the wider world and in any time period.  We invite traditional research presentations, pedagogy-focused presentations, or undergraduate paper panels. Full panel proposals are also welcome.  The conference provides a welcoming and collegial atmosphere, and we strongly encourage graduate students and independent and early-career scholars to submit proposals, including papers based on work(s)-in-progress.  Graduate students can submit their papers for the Barbara Blaszek Prize.

Proposals for presentations and/or panels should include a 100-150 word abstract for each presentation and a one-page c.v. for each presenter.  Email proposals to NYSAEH president, Jennifer Sovde (sovdej@canton.edu) by July 1, 2022.

The American Historical Association's Grants to Sustain and Advance the Work of Historical Organizations Program provides relief to institutions adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.  This opportunity was made possible with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) through the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.  In addition to supporting this special partnership with the Underground Railroad Heritage Center, the AHA-NEH SHARP grant allows NYSAEH to host the conference this year without a registration fee.  Registration includes dinner, admission to the museum, the keynote address on Friday, and lunch on Saturday.  Participants and attendees would only be responsible for their travel and accommodations expenses.
