The anthology Women in Lockdown looks at the private experiences of women during the COVID-19 pandemic, giving voice to their experiences as mothers, caretakers, nurses, educators, scientists, businesspersons, and elected officials. In this way it exposes the ways in which the pandemic has ushered in a different type of misogyny, but also how women found ways to resist and denounce it, even when ill themselves. Not only racist and misogynistic histories of medicine, but also capitalism’s machinery of profit and political machismo have fed COVID-19’s discriminatory etiology. Research has already highlighted the ways in which the pandemic has disproportionately affected people of color and women, in terms of access to health care, sustainable employment, fair housing, childcare, or federal relief funding. But how have women suffered privately? What makes women’s experience of the COVID-19 agony different? To what extent has misogyny, gender inequality, racism, homophobia, xenophobia, ageism, and discrimination against people with disabilities or different abilities will have found their way to pound women even under lockdown?
