The Critical Digital Humanities Initiative (CDHI) at the University of Toronto cordially invites submissions to our 2022 international conference, to take place Friday, September 30 and Saturday, October 1, 2022. Download the Call for Papers.
This year’s Critical Digital Humanities International Conference foregrounds critical DH research, praxis, and community partnerships. Critical DH is an intersectional field that emphasizes questions of power, social justice, and critical theory in making, analyzing, and using digital technologies. This is a version of digital humanities that places anti-racist, de/anti/postcolonial, feminist, and queer/trans/non-binary work at its core, and which understands our current shift in digital technology as an opportunity for social and political transformation. Critical DH foregrounds creative praxis, co-creation, public engagement, and community-based research.
Confirmed keynote speakers include Jennifer Wemigwans, President of Invert Media and Assistant Professor, University of Toronto; Wendy Hui Kyong Chun, Canada 150 Research Chair in New Media Studies, Simon Fraser University; and Lisa Nakamura, Gwendolyn Calvert Baker Collegiate Professor, University of Michigan.
The CDHI conference committee welcomes submissions on any aspect of critical DH research, praxis, and/or community partnerships in the humanities or interpretative social sciences. Possible topics include but are not limited to:
- The digital past and present
- Media archaeology
- De/anti/postcolonial DH
- Indigeneity, technology, and DH
- Black DH
- Archival activism and DH
- Multilingual DH
- Digital Libraries
- Critical data studies
- Deep mapping/spatial analysis
- Queer/Trans+ DH
- Digital infrastructures and digital sovereignty
- Minimal computing, sustainable DH
- Discriminatory algorithms
- Radical digital pedagogy
- Critical making
- Virtual/Augmented reality
- Digital research ethics
- DH and social justice
- Digitization and digitalization
- Text analysis
- Mis/information and social media
- Game studies and critical DH
All faculty, librarians, museum practitioners, staff, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and community partners are encouraged to apply. We welcome submissions from single authors as well as collaborative teams, including collaborations with students and community partners.
Session Types:
The conference organizing committee welcomes proposals in the following formats:
Conference Panel: submit a full conference panel with one chair, three 15-minute papers, and one commentor (chair and commentor can be the same person).
Roundtable Discussion: full session, with chair, organized around discussion of a critical DH theme, methodology, theory, or praxis.
Conference Paper / Project Presentation: 15-minute presentations submitted individually; the Program Committee will organize into themed sessions.
Workshop: interactive and/or hands-on session geared toward introducing others to a critical DH methodology, platform, tool, or practice.
Lightning Round: 7-minute snapshots of digital research, followed by 30 minutes for discussion and networking.
Posters: visual-based presentations to be displayed physically (Covid permitting) and virtually on the conference website.

Conference Panel or Roundtable
To submit a full conference panel or roundtable please submit the following via EasyChair:
- Primary contact name
- Contact details
- Institutional affiliation
- Name and affiliation of each scholar participating on the panel, roundtable, or running the workshop
- Name and affiliation of chair and commentator (*the chair and commentator can be the same person)
- 150 word biography for all presenters
- 1-2 page CV for all presenters
- Type of Session
- 300 word session abstract
- 200 word abstract for each scholar’s contribution
- 3-5 keywords
- Preference for either virtual (Sept 30) or in-person (Oct. 1) attendance. The panel organizer must poll members of the panel/roundtable to get a consensus on this before submitting the proposal
Workshop
To submit a workshop please submit the following via EasyChair:
- Primary contact name
- Contact details
- Institutional affiliation
- Name and affiliation of each scholar (if more than one) running the workshop
- 150 word biography for each presenter
- 1-2 page CV for all presenters
- 350 word abstract describing the topic/tool, learning objectives, mode(s) of participation, technical requirements (if any)
- 3-5 keywords
- Preference for either virtual (Sept 30) or in-person (Oct. 1) attendance. The workshop organizer must poll all other presenters, if any, to get a consensus on this before submitting the proposal
Deadline for submissions is 15 April 2022. Decisions will be made by 30 May 2022.
