As the culmination of a multi-museum collaboration on the topic of Afrofuturism, the Smithsonian is planning a scholarly program, Claiming Space: A Symposium on Black Futures - Past, Present, and Potential. The conference will take place virtually from January 27-29, 2022. Please check out our website, ClaimingSpace.si.edu, and the information included here.
Our call for proposals is now open and we invite multi-disciplinary scholars, writers, artists, and thinkers to submit a an individual proposal with a short abstract (350-500) via the form on our website by September 10. Scholars should select the themes they believe their work best corresponds with. Please find submission requirements, theme descriptions, and updates on our website. This program will be presented entirely online with free access and live captioning, with a variety of events both open to the greater public and limited to Symposium attendees. The Smithsonian Afrofuturism Series is a collaboration between the National Air and Space Museum, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, and the Nationla Museum of African Art.
