Delta Symposium and Arkansas Roots Music Festival - April 10 - 13

The Department of English, Philosophy, and World Languages at Arkansas State University announces the twenty-fifth annual Delta Symposium, April 10-13, 2019.  The Delta Symposium features a wide variety of scholarship that focuses on the Delta’s history and culture. Individual and panel presentations on topics relevant to the history and culture of the Arkansas and Mississippi Deltas and surrounding regions will be featured along with keynote presentations, video screenings, poetry and creative writing, and live music.

Special emphasis is on this year's theme of “Dislocation and the Delta.” The focus is on how people have been dislocated from their own communities as well as on ways that dislocated people have come to live in the region. We have a wide variety of presenters, including the Arkansas natives Harry Thomason -- who has made major contributions as a producer and screenwriter -- and our state’s 2018 poet laureate, Jo McDougall. We are also honored to bring Simon Bronner to campus to share his scholarship on Delta Blues through the university’s Lecture/Concert Series. On Saturday, we’ll continue the morning’s activities with Delta Heritage Day that will feature a documentary film presentation on restorative justice work in the Elaine, Arkansas community.

The 2019 event will conclude on Saturday with the Arkansas Roots Music Festival through continued support from KASU FM 91.9. This year’s music highlights the musical forms relates to rock-a-billy through showcasing Arkansas bands in a free festival. Acts include the Ozark Highlands Trio’s string band music, Kurt and Andrea Stephenson’s bluegrass, Mookie Cartwright’s blues, and the rock-a-billy of the Boss Tweeds.

All events are free and open to the public. For more information, feel free to contact me below:
