From Curiosity Cabinets to Virtual Tours: Museums as Curated Objects and Dynamic Spaces

PAMLA Panel; Conference Dates: Nov 11-13; Location: Los Angeles

When we think of museums, we usually consider only the objects within them. However, we are inspired to look up from the glass case to ponder the buildings, their people, and their purpose. We want to look at museums through a wide lens--as controversial spaces, as educational spaces, comforting and discomfiting spaces, inspirers of pop culture, sellers of fridge magnets to people just classy enough not to buy bumper stickers, etc. We're interested in how museums curate history for the audience, how museums situate themselves as the arbiters of history and culture, and how they respond to contested history. We welcome papers that investigate museums of the past and present. Papers may also focus on the museum as an object—an object one can walk into, run screaming away from, and want to hide in (e.g. From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler). Send presentation proposals of 250-500 words to Melissa Bender (mmbender@ucdavis.edu).
