για τη χορήγηση εννέα (9) υποτροφιών
από τα έσοδα των Γενικών Κληροδοτημάτων υπέρ της Εκπαιδεύσεως
Η Ακαδημία Αθηνών προκηρύσσει διαγωνισμό για τη χορήγηση εννέα (9) υποτροφιών για εκπόνηση
διδακτορικής διατριβής στην Ελλάδα ή τo εξωτερικό από τα έσοδα των Γενικών Κληροδοτημάτων υπέρ της
Εκπαιδεύσεως.
Οι όροι απονομής των υποτροφιών είναι οι ακόλουθοι:
1. Οι υποτροφίες χορηγούνται για δύο (2) συνεχή ακαδημαϊκά έτη με έναρξη το έτος 2017-2018, και
μπορεί να παραταθούν μέχρι ένα (1) ακόμη έτος, κατά την κρίση της Ακαδημίας Αθηνών, εφόσον οι
υπότροφοι προσκομίζουν στοιχεία σχετικά με την πορεία των σπουδών τους και τη διαγωγή τους, τα οποία να
δικαιολογούν την παράταση και υπό την προϋπόθεση ότι τα έσοδα των Γενικών Κληροδοτημάτων υπέρ της
Εκπαιδεύσεως επαρκούν.
2. Οι υποψήφιοι υπότροφοι θα πρέπει να έχουν γίνει δεκτοί για εκπόνηση διδακτορικής διατριβής σε ένα εκ
των καλυτέρων Πανεπιστημίων της Ελλάδας ή του εξωτερικού για την πραγματοποίηση των σπουδών τους.
Το Ίδρυμα, στο οποίο θα ειδικευτούν οι υπότροφοι, καθώς και το πρόγραμμα σπουδών τους υπόκεινται στην
έγκριση της Ακαδημίας Αθηνών. Η υποτροφία χορηγείται μόνον για σπουδές πλήρους παρακολούθησης.
Αιτήσεις για σπουδές μερικής παρακολούθησης ή εξ αποστάσεως δεν γίνονται δεκτές.
3. Το ποσόν της υποτροφίας ανέρχεται σε τετρακόσια πενήντα ευρώ (450,00€) τον μήνα, εφόσον πρόκειται
για υποτροφία εσωτερικού, και σε χίλια πεντακόσια ευρώ (1.500,00€) τον μήνα, εφόσον πρόκειται για
υποτροφία εξωτερικού. Επίσης, στον υπότροφο θα καταβληθούν, εφόσον πρόκειται για υποτροφία εξωτερικού,
τα έξοδα μετάβασής του στο εξωτερικό και, μετά τη λήξη της μετεκπαίδευσής του, τα έξοδα επιστροφής του,
καθοριζόμενα με απόφαση της Συγκλήτου της Ακαδημίας Αθηνών.
4. Δεκτοί στον διαγωνισμό γίνονται Έλληνες υπήκοοι ή υπήκοοι κράτους-μέλους της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης
ή υπήκοοι άλλων κρατών ελληνικής καταγωγής, πτυχιούχοι Σχολών/Τμημάτων όπως ορίζονται στο άρθρο 5,
ελληνικών Πανεπιστημίων/Πολυτεχνείων ή ισοτίμων Πανεπιστημίων/Πολυτεχνείων κρατών μελών της
Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης, με βαθμό βασικού τίτλου σπουδών τουλάχιστον «Λίαν Καλώς», εφόσον δεν έχουν
υπερβεί το 36ο έτος της ηλικίας τους μέχρι την ημερομηνία έναρξης του διαγωνισμού.
5. Τα επιστημονικά αντικείμενα, οι Σχολές και τα Τμήματα των οποίων οι πτυχιούχοι γίνονται δεκτοί, οι
θέσεις και τα μαθήματα στα οποία θα εξεταστούν γραπτά οι υποψήφιοι ανά επιστημονικό αντικείμενο, είναι τα

Οι υποψήφιοι υπότροφοι, οι επιθυμούντες να μεταβούν στο εξωτερικό, θα εξεταστούν επίσης υποχρεωτικά,
γραπτά και προφορικά, στην γλώσσα διδασκαλίας του Πανεπιστημίου υποδοχής, προαιρετικά δε, με αίτησή
τους, και σε περισσότερες από μία ξένη γλώσσα.
Η επιτυχία στην ξένη γλώσσα αποτελεί απαραίτητη προϋπόθεση για τη συμμετοχή των υποψηφίων του
εξωτερικού στις εξετάσεις των λοιπών μαθημάτων.
6. O διαγωνισμός θα διεξαχθεί στην Αθήνα, στα Γραφεία του Μεγάρου της Ακαδημίας Αθηνών (δ/νση:
Πανεπιστημίου 28), ενώπιον της αρμόδιας Επιτροπής.
7. Ημέρα έναρξης του διαγωνισμού ορίζεται η Παρασκευή 2 Ιουνίου 2017, ημέρα κατά την οποία θα
πραγματοποιηθεί η εξέταση των ξένων γλωσσών σε όλα τα επιστημονικά αντικείμενα ως ακολούθως:
Ώρα 09:00π.μ. για τα επιστημονικά αντικείμενα των Θετικών Επιστημών,
Ώρα 12:00μ.για τα επιστημονικά αντικείμενα των Γραμμάτων και των Καλών Τεχνών και την ίδια ώρα
12:00μ. για τα επιστημονικά αντικείμενα των Ηθικών και Πολιτικών Επιστημών.
Η εξέταση των μαθημάτων (στα επιστημονικά αντικείμενα των Θετικών Επιστημών) Φυσική και Χημεία
Περιβάλλοντος και Βιολογία-Φυσιολογία θα πραγματοποιηθεί την Τετάρτη 7 Ιουνίου 2017 και ώρα

10:00π.μ.
Η εξέταση των μαθημάτων (στα επιστημονικά αντικείμενα των Γραμμάτων και των Καλών Τεχνών)
Αρχαία Ελληνική Φιλολογία, Η Αθήνα την εποχή του Περικλή με έμφαση στην αρχιτεκτονική, πλαστική και
ζωγραφική – αγγειογραφία και Αρχαία Ιστορία θα πραγματοποιηθεί την Πέμπτη 8 Ιουνίου 2017 και ώρα
09:30π.μ. και του μαθήματος Λατινική Φιλολογία την Παρασκευή 9 Ιουνίου 2017 και ώρα 13:00.
Η εξέταση των μαθημάτων (στα επιστημονικά αντικείμενα των Ηθικών και Πολιτικών Επιστημών)
Συγκριτική Πολιτική, Γενικό Ποινικό Δίκαιο και Ιστορία της Αρχαίας Φιλοσοφίας θα πραγματοποιηθεί την
Τετάρτη 7 Ιουνίου 2017 και ώρα 13:00, του μαθήματος Διεθνείς Σχέσεις την Πέμπτη 8 Ιουνίου 2017 και ώρα
13:30 και των μαθημάτων Ποινική Δικονομία και Ιστορία της Νεώτερης Ευρωπαϊκής Φιλοσοφίας την
Παρασκευή 9 Ιουνίου 2017 και ώρα 13:00.
Οι υποψήφιοι κατά τις ημέρες των εξετάσεων πρέπει να έχουν μαζί τους την αστυνομική τους
ταυτότητα.
8. Οι υποψήφιοι πρέπει να συγκεντρώσουν στο μάθημα που θα εξεταστούν βαθμό τουλάχιστον δέκα
τέσσερα (14), ή στα μαθήματα που θα εξεταστούν μέσον όρο βαθμολογίας τουλάχιστον δέκα τέσσερα (14), σε
κλίμακα με άριστα το βαθμό είκοσι (20). Επίσης, οι υποψήφιοι που θα εξεταστούν στην ξένη γλώσσα, θα
πρέπει απαραιτήτως να συγκεντρώσουν βαθμό τουλάχιστον δέκα τέσσερα (14), ο οποίος δεν συνυπολογίζεται
στην εξαγωγή της τελικής βαθμολογίας. Αιτήσεις για αναβαθμολόγηση δεν γίνονται δεκτές, γιατί δεν
προβλέπεται από το Νόμο.
9. Απαραίτητη προϋπόθεση για την έναρξη καταβολής της υποτροφίας είναι η προηγούμενη σύναψη μετά
του υποτρόφου στην Αθήνα του οικείου συμβολαίου υποτροφίας.
Εφόσον πρόκειται για υποτροφία εξωτερικού, η καταβολή της αρχίζει από την έναρξη του πρώτου
ακαδημαϊκού έτους ή του εξαμήνου, στο οποίο αναφέρεται η υποτροφία (άρθρο 1), εφόσον η έναρξη του
ακαδημαϊκού έτους ή του εξαμήνου έπεται της άφιξης του υποτρόφου στην αλλοδαπή, διαφορετικά από την
ημέρα της άφιξης του υποτρόφου στην αλλοδαπή, η οποία αποδεικνύεται με πιστοποιητικό του οικείου Έλληνα
Προξένου.
Εφόσον πρόκειται για υποτροφία εσωτερικού, η καταβολή της αρχίζει από την έναρξη του πρώτου
ακαδημαϊκού έτους ή εξαμήνου, στο οποίο αναφέρεται η υποτροφία (άρθρο 1). Σημειώνεται ότι η υποτροφία
εσωτερικού δεν παρέχεται κατά τους μήνες Ιούλιο-Αύγουστο.
10. Εάν η υποτροφία διακοπεί από υπαιτιότητά του/της υποτρόφου, ο/η υπότροφος υποχρεούται να
επιστρέψει το ποσό της υποτροφίας, που έχει λάβει μέχρι τότε, εφαρμοζομένων για την είσπραξη αυτού των
διατάξεων του νόμου «περί εισπράξεως των δημοσίων εσόδων». Η υποτροφία διακόπτεται, εάν, για
οποιονδήποτε λόγο, επέλθει μείωση των ετησίων εσόδων του Κληροδοτήματος. Στην περίπτωση αυτή ουδέν
δικαίωμα γεννάται υπέρ του/της υποτρόφου του/της οποίας διακόπηκε η υποτροφία.
11. Όσοι επιθυμούν να μετάσχουν στο διαγωνισμό, υποχρεούνται να υποβάλουν στο Πρωτόκολλο της
Ακαδημίας Αθηνών (ταχ. δ/νση: Πανεπιστημίου 28, Τ.Κ. 106 79, Αθήνα), το βραδύτερο δέκα πέντε (15)
πλήρεις ημέρες πριν από την ημέρα έναρξης του διαγωνισμού, αίτηση στην οποία θα πρέπει να δηλώνουν το
επιστημονικό αντικείμενο για το οποίο υποβάλλουν υποψηφιότητα.
Oι υποψήφιοι δεν μπορούν να υποβάλουν αίτηση υποψηφιότητας σε περισσότερα από ένα
επιστημονικά αντικείμενα.
Στην αίτηση πρέπει να επισυνάπτονται τα εξής δικαιολογητικά:
α) Φωτοαντίγραφο των απαιτούμενων τίτλων σπουδών (άρθρο 5). Σε περίπτωση που ο τίτλος προέρχεται
από Πανεπιστήμιο κράτους μέλους της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης πρέπει να συνοδεύεται από βεβαίωση ισοτιμίας
και βαθμολογικής αντιστοίχισης από τον Δ.Ο.Α.Τ.Α.Π. ή το ΔΙ.ΚΑ.Τ.Σ.Α.
β) Φωτοαντίγραφο βεβαίωσης Πανεπιστημίου ότι ο υποψήφιος έχει γίνει δεκτός για εκπόνηση
διδακτορικής διατριβής στην Ελλάδα ή το εξωτερικό στον αντίστοιχο κλάδο.
γ) Φωτοαντίγραφο δελτίου αστυνομικής ταυτότητας ή διαβατηρίου (σε ισχύ) ή πιστοποιητικού ελληνικής
καταγωγής και ηλικίας όχι μεγαλύτερης των 36 ετών.

δ) Υπεύθυνη δήλωση (Ν. 1599/86) με βεβαίωση του γνήσιου της υπογραφής ότι ο υποψήφιος δεν έλαβε ή
δεν λαμβάνει υποτροφία για τις ίδιες σπουδές (δηλ. και για τις παρούσες σπουδές και για το ίδιο επίπεδο
σπουδών) από άλλη κληρονομία, κληροδοσία, δωρεά, ή άλλη πηγή και δεν εξέπεσε από δική του υπαιτιότητα
από άλλη υποτροφία, η οποία τυχόν του απενεμήθη προηγουμένως.
ε) Αντίγραφο τελευταίου εκκαθαριστικού σημειώματος της αρμόδιας Δ.Ο.Υ. Για υποψηφίους άνω των 25
ετών το προσωπικό εισόδημα δεν θα πρέπει να υπερβαίνει το ποσό των είκοσι χιλιάδων ευρώ (20.000,00€) για
υποψηφίους του εσωτερικού και το ποσό των τριάντα χιλιάδων ευρώ (30.000,00€) για υποψηφίους του
εξωτερικού. Σε περίπτωση που ο υποψήφιος δεν έχει προσωπικό εισόδημα, θα λαμβάνεται υπόψη το
οικογενειακό εισόδημα το οποίο ορίζεται παρακάτω.
Αν ο υποψήφιος δεν έχει υπερβεί το 25ο έτος της ηλικίας του κατά το χρόνο διενέργειας του διαγωνισμού
και δεν έχει προσωπικό εισόδημα απαιτείται η υποβολή υπεύθυνης δήλωσης του Ν. 1599/86 με βεβαίωση του
γνήσιου της υπογραφής, στην οποία δηλώνει ότι δεν έχει προσωπικό εισόδημα καθώς και αντίγραφο του
τελευταίου οικογενειακού εκκαθαριστικού σημειώματος. Το οικογενειακό εισόδημα δεν θα πρέπει να
υπερβαίνει τις τριάντα πέντε χιλιάδες ευρώ (35.000,00€) για υποψηφίους του εσωτερικού και τις σαράντα
εννέα χιλιάδες ευρώ (49.000,00€) για υποψηφίους του εξωτερικού. Το ανωτέρω ποσό προσαυξάνεται κατά
δύο χιλιάδες πεντακόσια ευρώ (2.500,00€) για κάθε επιπλέον προστατευόμενο τέκνο, σε οικογένειες με άνω
των δύο (2) προστατευομένων τέκνων.
στ) Σύντομο βιογραφικό σημείωμα.
Σημειώνεται ότι τα φωτοαντίγραφα εγγράφων που έχουν εκδοθεί από αλλοδαπές αρχές θα πρέπει να
είναι επικυρωμένα.
Οι αιτήσεις μαζί με όλα τα ανωτέρω δικαιολογητικά μπορούν να υποβληθούν και ταχυδρομικώς «επί συστάσει
και αποδείξει» μέχρι την ημερομηνία λήξης της προθεσμίας υποβολής αιτήσεων.
Σημ.: H Ακαδημία Αθηνών αναζητεί υποχρεωτικά αυτεπαγγέλτως:
α) Αντίγραφο ποινικού μητρώου γενικής χρήσης.
Μετά τη λήξη της προθεσμίας υποβολής αιτήσεων και τον έλεγχο των δικαιολογητικών θα αναρτηθούν
πίνακες με τα ονόματα των υποψηφίων που πληρούν τις προϋποθέσεις της Προκήρυξης και μπορούν να
συμμετάσχουν στον διαγωνισμό, και τα ονόματα των υποψηφίων που έχουν ελλιπή δικαιολογητικά ή δεν
πληρούν τις προϋποθέσεις και αποκλείονται από τον διαγωνισμό.
12. Τα της διεξαγωγής του διαγωνισμού και της παροχής των υποτροφιών κλπ. διέπονται από τις διατάξεις
του Ν.4182/10.9.2013.

The Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) is seeking applications for the KHS research fellowship program for the spring 2017 cycle. The program provides funding for senior and emerging scholars, including doctoral students, whose research requires the use of KHS collections and research resources – visit http://history.ky.gov/collections/ for more information on signature collections.

Fellowship residency at the KHS campus in Frankfort, Kentucky, ranges from one to four weeks. KHS is conveniently located in central Kentucky, within driving distance of numerous universities, archival repositories, and historic sites. CfA: Doctoral Scholarships in Transcultural Studies (Heidelberg)
The Graduate Programme for Transcultural Studies of the Cluster of Excellence "Asia and Europe in a Global Context" at Heidelberg University welcomes applications for up to six doctoral scholarships beginning in the winter semester 2017/18.
The three-year programme offers a monthly scholarship of 1.200 Euro. It further supports its members in framing their research through advanced courses as well as individual supervision and mentoring. Half of the scholarships are reserved for young scholars from Asia.
Applicants are expected to propose a doctoral project with a strong affiliation to one of the four research areas of the Cluster (Governance & Administration, Public Spheres, Knowledge Systems, Historicities & Heritage). They must hold an M.A. or equivalent in a discipline of the humanities or social sciences with an above-average grade and provide proof of advanced language skills in English.
Applications, including a CV, a letter of intention, a project proposal, a schedule for the dissertation, and two letters of recommendation are submitted through an Online Application System.
The deadline for applications is March 15, 2017.

1η ΠΡΟΚΗΡΥΞΗ ΥΠΟΤΡΟΦΙΩΝ ΕΛΙΔΕΚ ΓΙΑ ΥΠΟΨΗΦΙΟΥΣ ΔΙΔΑΚΤΟΡΕΣ

Το πρόγραμμα αποτελεί την πρώτη δράση του Ελληνικού Ιδρύματος Έρευνας και Καινοτομίας (ΕΛΙΔΕΚ) και  αποσκοπεί στη χρηματοδότηση Υποψηφίων Διδακτόρων για την εκπόνηση της Διδακτορικής τους διατριβής σε Ανώτατα Εκπαιδευτικά Ιδρύματα (ΑΕΙ) ή/και σε Ερευνητικά Κέντρα συνεργαζόμενα με ΑΕΙ, στην Ελλάδα.

Αίτηση χρηματοδότησης μπορούν να υποβάλουν και υποψήφιοι διδάκτορες οι οποίοι/ες εκπονούν ήδη τη διδακτορική διατριβή τους σε Α.Ε.Ι. της ημεδαπής ή της αλλοδαπής, εφόσον πληρούν τις προϋποθέσεις του Κεφαλαίου 3 της παρούσας προκήρυξης. Επιπλέον, προϋπόθεση για τους υποψήφιους διδάκτορες Α.Ε.Ι. της αλλοδαπής είναι να έχουν γίνει δεκτοί σε Ελληνικό Α.Ε.Ι. για να ολοκληρώσουν τη διδακτορική τους διατριβή στην Ελλάδα, και στην περίπτωση συνεπίβλεψης, ο τίτλος να απονεμηθεί από το Ελληνικό ΑΕΙ.

Η διάρκεια της χρηματοδότησης (υπό μορφή υποτροφίας) είναι έως 3 έτη.

Η συνολική δημόσια δαπάνη της παρούσας προκήρυξης ανέρχεται στα 8.500.000,00 € και χρηματοδοτείται σύμφωνα με την υπογραφείσα δανειακή σύμβαση μεταξύ του Ελληνικού Δημοσίου και της Ευρωπαϊκής Τράπεζας Επενδύσεων.

Η υποβολή της αίτησης είναι δυνατή από την 1^η Νοεμβρίου 2016 και ώρα 08:00 έως και  την 30^η Νοεμβρίου 2016 και ώρα 17:00.

ANNE DHU MCLUCAS GRADUATE STUDENT FELLOWSHIP/Society for American Music Deadline: November 1, 2016

The Society for American Music is pleased to announce the establishment of a new fellowship for graduate students in honor of the late Anne Dhu McLucas. McLucas was a brilliant polymath with wide-ranging interests in all things musical, a wonderful teacher, a gifted and supportive mentor, and a path-breaking scholar. The fellowship honors Prof. McLucas’ primary areas of scholarly interest by providing support to a graduate student conducting research (archival or fieldwork) on traditional music (music in the oral tradition) or Native American/First Nations music. The fellowship is open to students currently enrolled in a graduate program in Ethnomusicology, Musicology, Folklore, Anthropology, or other relevant discipline. The fellowship may support research expenses, including but not limited to travel, lodging, media resources, and duplication expenses. The maximum award is $1,000.00.
Interested applicants should submit: a one-page letter of application with contact information; a narrative of three-to-five pages (double-spaced) that describes the scope of the project and the need for funding; a current CV; a one-page budget for the project; and one letter of reference from a scholar who is familiar with your work (the letter should be sent separately by your recommender to the committee chair). Application materials should be submitted electronically to Paul F. Wells (paul.wells@mtsu.edu), Chair of the McLucas Fellowship Committee. Deadline for submissions is November 1, 2016.
A one-page budget and final report are to be submitted by the recipient to the Executive Director of the Society no more than one year after the award is presented.

Kentucky Historical Society Churchill Weavers Fellowship

The Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) is home to one of the finest weaving archives in the nation—the Churchill Weavers collection. Comprised of more than 30,000 handwoven textiles and related weaving and business records, this collection promises to enrich many areas of scholarship and exhibition research, especially those related to labor history, the history of 20^th century capitalism, material culture, and the history of Appalachia.
The Kentucky Historical Society Foundation has provided KHS short-term fellowship funds (one- to four-week residencies at $400/week) to assist researchers with travel and living expenses while using the Churchill Weavers collection. Applications are welcome from independent scholars, college and university teachers, museum professionals, graduate students, and scholars working in other related disciplines. CfA: Doctoral Scholarships in Transcultural Studies (Heidelberg)

The Graduate Programme for Transcultural Studies of the Cluster of Excellence "Asia and Europe in a Global Context" at Heidelberg University welcomes applications for up to four doctoral scholarships beginning in the winter semester 2016/17.
The programme offers a monthly scholarship of 1.200 Euro. It further supports scholarship holders in framing their research through advanced courses as well as individual supervision and mentoring. Half of the scholarships are reserved for young scholars from Asia.
Applicants are expected to propose a doctoral project with a strong affiliation to one of the four research areas of the Cluster (Governance&Administration, Public Spheres, Knowledge Systems, Historicities&Heritage). They must hold an M.A. or equivalent in a discipline of the humanities or social sciences with an above-average grade. Performance Studies MA at Texas A&M Now Accepting Applications

The Department of Performance Studies at Texas A&M University is accepting applications for the Master of Arts degree in Performance Studies. Graduate Assistantships, which include tuition, healthcare benefits, and a monthly stipend, are available for qualified students.

Performance Studies scholars examine relationships between performance and culture. The department has research strengths in folklore studies, ethnomusicology, American popular music, popular music studies, Africana studies, dance and ritual studies, politics and/of performance, performance ethnography, religious studies, theatre history, media studies, and women’s studies. Our students and faculty are committed to the ethnographic study of vernacular culture and the integration of practice and research.

As an M.A.-only program, we focus on preparing students for professional careers in research, performance creation, and public outreach; for teaching at the high school and community-college level; and for admission to top-tier, research-intensive Ph.D. programs. Many of our students receive funding to conduct ethnographic fieldwork and archival research, and include performance as components of their M.A. theses. As they’re writing and researching, they’re also delivering papers at national and regional conferences, publishing book reviews, and winning university- and college-wide fellowships for their research and professional development.

Research Fellowships at the John Carter Brown Library (2016-2017)

The John Carter Brown Library (JCB), an independently funded institution for advanced research on the campus of Brown University, will award approximately forty residential fellowships for the year July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017. The Library contains one of the world’s premier collections of primary materials related to the discovery, exploration, and settlement of the New World to 1825, including books, maps, newspapers, and other printed objects. JCB Fellowships are open to scholars and writers working on all aspects of the Americas in the early modern period.

Short-term Fellowships are for two to four months with a monthly stipend of $2,100. Open to US and foreign citizens who are engaged in pre- or post-doctoral or independent research. Graduate students must have passed their preliminary or general examinations at the time of application.

Long-Term Fellowships are for five to ten months with a monthly stipend of $4,200. These include two to four NEH Fellowships, for which an applicant must be a US citizen or have lived in the US for the three years preceding the application deadline, and other long-term JCB awards for which all nationalities are eligible. Graduate students are not eligible for long-term JCB Fellowships.

Recipients of all fellowships must relocate to Providence and be in continuous residence at the JCB for the full term of the award. Rooms are available for rent at Fiering House, the JCB’s Fellows’ residence, a beautifully restored 1869 house just four blocks from the Library.

The deadline for short- and long-term fellowships is December 1, 2015.

Resident Scholar Fellowships Offered

The School for Advanced Research will begin accepting applications for 2016-2017 Resident Scholar fellowships on September 1, 2015
Nine-month Resident Scholar Fellowships are awarded to scholars who have completed their research and analysis in the social sciences, humanities, and Native arts and who need time to reflect, debate, and write. Fellowships are awarded annually by the School for Advanced Research (SAR) to four or five scholars who have completed their research and who need time to prepare manuscripts or dissertations on topics important to the understanding of humankind. Resident scholars may approach their research from the perspective of anthropology or from related fields such as history and sociology. Scholars from the humanities and social sciences are encouraged to apply.
The tenure runs from 9/1/16 to 5/31/17 and includes a stipend and low-cost housing.

Immigrant Ethnographies PhD scholarship (EU/UK fee waiver)

Emigration has long occupied Scottish researchers – the Scots diaspora – but there is growing interest in immigration, the new and dynamic populations who contribute to reframed concepts of contemporary Scottish identity. This PhD research will result in a focused ethnography at the forefront of contemporary understanding on the creative expressions of settlers/immigrants and their performance of everyday life. More and more, various facets of life in Scotland exist as a result of the dynamic lifestyles and cultures of immigrants from around the world. The Elphinstone Institute’s focus on creative expression in Scotland gives it a unique position to meet the challenges of documenting and analysing both the everyday lives and the wider influences of immigrants today. This project will build on Folklore’s century-long history of immigrant research (e.g., Boatright, Dorson, Herrera-Sobek) and approach contemporary Scottish immigration with established ethnographic methodologies and relevant archiving practices.
The candidate will explore immigrant experience and expressivity, which, taken in conjunction with the more distant statistical analyses of data-driven disciplines, will lead to greater understanding of immigrant experience and influence at both micro and macro levels. Research will focus on vernacular performance practices, placing them in wider contexts to examine how immigrant creativity contributes to new, and renewed, culture and customs in the home country.
Possible areas of focus include Vernacular belief; Funerary practices; Foodways; Communications (traditional and electronic); Musical performance (sacred and secular); Interior design/architecture (i.e. how immigrants reshape interiors of physical homes in Scotland); Immigrant businesses; Narratives of immigrant-experience (both of immigrants, and those of relatives/friends who have stayed in countries of origin).
The project would build on the Institute’s recent work on immigrant communities in Scotland and feed into a range of planned academic and public engagement initiatives.

The Historical Society of Pennsylvania announces it 2014-2015 Balch Institute Fellowships in Ethnic and/or 20th-Century History

The Historical Society of Pennsylvania will award three one-month Balch Institute fellowships to enable research on topics related to the ethnic and immigrant experience in the United States and/or American cultural, social, political, or economic history post-1875. The fellowships support one month of residency in Philadelphia during the 2014-2015 academic year. Past Balch fellows have done research on immigrant children, Italian American fascism, German Americans in the Civil War, Pan-Americanism, African American women's political activism, and much more.

The Historical Society of Pennsylvania, enriched by the holdings of the Balch Institute for Ethnic Studies, holds more than 19 million personal, organizational, and business manuscripts, as well 560,000 printed items and 312,000 graphic images concerning national and regional political, social, and family history. The Historical Society's archives richly document the social, cultural, and economic history of a region central to many aspects of the nation's development from colonial times to the 20th century. The Balch Institute collections bring the HSP strength in documenting ethnic and immigrant history, with significant holdings of ethnic newspapers, records of benevolent societies and other local and national ethnic organizations, and personal papers of prominent leaders in ethnic and immigrant communities.

The stipend is $2,000. Fellowships are tenable for any one-month period between June 2014 and May 2015. They support advanced, postdoctoral, and dissertation research. Deadline for receipt of applications is March 1, 2014, with a decision to be made by April 15. International Dissertation Research Fellowship (IDRF)

The Mellon International Dissertation Research Fellowship (IDRF) offers nine to twelve months of support to graduate students in the humanities and humanistic social sciences who are enrolled in PhD programs in the United States and conducting dissertation research on non-US topics. Eighty fellowships are awarded annually.  Fellowship amounts vary depending on the research plan, with a per-fellowship average of $20,000. The fellowship includes participation in an SSRC-funded interdisciplinary workshop upon the completion of IDRF-funded research.

Eligibility

The program is open to graduate students in the humanities and social sciences -- regardless of citizenship -- enrolled in PhD programs in the United States. Applicants to the 2014 IDRF competition must complete all PhD requirements except on-site research by the time the fellowship begins or by December 2014, whichever comes first.

The program invites proposals for dissertation research conducted, in whole or in part, outside the United States, about non-US topics. It will consider applications for dissertation research grounded in a single site, informed by broader cross-regional and interdisciplinary perspectives, as well as applications for multi-sited, comparative, and transregional research.  Proposals that identify the United States as a case for comparative inquiry are welcome; however, proposals which focus predominantly or exclusively on the United States are not eligible. 

Applicants from select disciplines within the humanities (Art History, Architectural History, Classics, Drama/Theater, Film Studies, Literature, Musicology, Performance Studies, Philosophy, Political Theory, and Religion) are welcome to request three or more months of funding for international on-site dissertation research (in combination with US-based research, for a total of nine to twelve months of funding). All other applicants (for instance, those in Anthropology, Geography, History, Political Science, and Sociology, among others) must request nine to twelve months of on-site, site-specific dissertation research with a minimum of six months of research outside of the United States. Research within the United States must be site-specific (eg, at a particular archive) and cannot be at the applicant’s home institution unless that institution has necessary site-specific research holdings. Please note that the IDRF program supports research and may not be used for dissertation write-up.

Applicants who have completed significant funded dissertation research in one country by the start of their proposed IDRF research may be ineligible to apply to the IDRF to extend research time in the same country. Eligibility will be at the discretion of the IDRF program, depending on completed research time and funding. The IDRF program expects fellows to remain at their research site(s) for the full nine- to twelve-month funding period. The IDRF program will not support study at foreign universities, conference participation, or dissertation write-up. The program does not accept applications from PhD programs in law, business, medicine, nursing or journalism, nor does it accept applications in doctoral programs that do not lead to a PhD. Selection Criteria

The IDRF competition promotes a range of approaches and research designs beyond single-site or single-country research, including comparative work at the national and regional levels and explicit comparison of cases across time frames. The program is open to proposals informed by a range of methodologies in the humanities and humanistic social sciences, including research in archives and manuscript collections, fieldwork and surveys, and quantitative data collection.

Applicants are expected to write in clear, intelligible prose for a selection committee that is multi-disciplinary and cross-regional. Proposals should display a thorough knowledge of the major concepts, theories, and methods in the applicant's discipline and in other related fields, as well as a bibliography relevant to the research. Applicants should specify why an extended period of on-site research is critical for successful completion of the proposed doctoral dissertation. The research design of proposals should be realistic in scope, clearly formulated, and responsive to theoretical and methodological concerns. Applicants should provide evidence of having attained an appropriate level of training to undertake the proposed research, including evidence of a degree of language fluency sufficient to complete the project.  For more information on the 2014 IDRF competition, please refer to our Frequently Asked Questions.
