Sixteenth Century Studies Conference, 2015

The Sixteenth Century Society and Conference (SCSC) is now accepting proposals for individual presentation proposals and complete panels for its 2014 annual conference, to be held 22-25 October 2015 at the Sheraton Wall Centre Hotel in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

The Journal of Jesuit Studies regularly sponsors panels at this conference.  We are looking to organize panels in any aspect of Jesuit history up to 1700.  Two areas of particular interest to this season's organizers are:
1. Ethnohistory: papers or panels concerning the role of Jesuits in writing or preserving accounts of indigenous peoples; research in ethnomusicology, artisanal production, etc.; studies of relationships among the ethnic groups from which Jesuits came; discussions of how Jesuits confronted different ethnic groups in their missions; problems related to larger issues of clashes of culture.  Scope: any continent on which the Jesuits engaged in educational, artistic, scientific, or religious activity, 1540s-1700.

2. Environmental studies: papers or panels concerning the role of Jesuits in shaping or changing the physical environment in which they worked; issues related to construction, agricultural practices, adaptation, use of materials not known in Europe, etc. Scope: any continent on which the Jesuits engaged in educational, artistic, scientific, or religious activity, 1540s-1700.

Please submit abstracts of no more than 250 words, along with brief biographical information (no more than 3 to 4 sentences, including affiliation, rank and one or two important publications or other evidence of scholarship) to Kathleen Comerford,kcomerfo@georgiasouthern.edu, no later than March 16, 2015.

Thank you.
