Call for Proposals: Destabilizing Folklore

AFS @ MLA (American Folklore Society @ Modern Language Association) seeks paper proposals for a panel session at the 2018 MLA Convention in New York, January 4–7, 2018. The session topic is “Destabilizing Folklore: Cultural Production in Moments of Insecurity.”
#States of Insecurity—the presidential theme of the 2018 MLA Convention—invites reflections upon how our intellectual, artistic, and pedagogical work in folklore may offer strategies for negotiating the political, economic, and ideological insecurities of our time. Folklore may reinforce beliefs and validate traditions, but it also has the power to destabilize our identities, narratives, communities, texts, disciplines, and more.
Please submit an abstract (no more than 300 words) that explores this topic, along with a brief CV, to James Deutsch (deutschj@si.edu) by March 15, 2017. Presenters must already be or become members of the Modern Language Association.
