alladi Smriti: History,Culture&Archaeological Studies (Commemoration Volume to Prof. M.L.K.Murty)


Dear Professor,

We are extremely happy to inform you that some of the archaeologists, historians, colleagues in India and abroad have decided to bring out a Commemoration volume in honour of Prof.M.L.K.Murty. As you are aware Prof.Malladi Leela Krishna Murty was born on 12-03-1941 in Bapatla, Guntur. District, Andhra Pradesh . He was popularly known as MLK .Murty.. Prof.Murty was associated with archaeological and historical research for more than four decades. He did his MA (1962) in Ancient Indian Culture and Archaeology (with specialization in environmental archaeology), M.S.University, Baroda (India). He did his PhD(1967) in Prehistoric Archaeology under the able guidance of Prof.H.D,Sankalia, (Doyen of Indian Archaeology),Deccan College ,University of Pune.. He had distinguished academic record and published more than 100 research papers in national and international Journals such as World Archaeology, Man and Environment, etc:  Many Students got their MPhil and Ph.D degrees under his supervision. He got financial assistance from UGC and ICHR for his research projects.. He explored and excavated many Archaeological Sites in India. He was closely associated with Archaeological Survey of India, A.P. State Dept of Archaeology and Museums, Indian Council of Historical Research , and other research institutions in India

He was very actively associated with the Deccan College,-a pioneering Archaeological Research institution in India. His Students are occupying positions of eminence, are sprinkled throughout the length and breadth of India 
        
First he joined as a Lecturer in Archaeology, 12-08-1970 to 02-05-1985, Reader in Asian Archaeology, 03-05-1985 to 03-05-1988, Deccan College Postgraduate and Research Institute, Pune, India .Later on he was appointed as Professor and Dean,School of  History , Culture and Archaeology, Potti Sriramulu Telugu University, Srisailam Campus (Andhra Pradesh), from 04-05-1988 to 22-12-1988,  He was a Professor of Regional Studies( 23-12-1988 to 31-03-2003), University of Hyderabad,. (Retired from the University from 01-04-2003.) He was Head and Director of Centre for Regional Studies and Centre for Folk Culture Studies, Hyderabad Central University, from 1989 till retirement, After retirement he worked as a Emeritus Professor ,Guest Professor at the South Asia Institute, University of Heidelberg, Germany, for the summer term (April – August) of 1983.  The teaching assignment covered Indian archaeology, ethnology, and folk religion.

He was a Visiting Fellow at Clare Hall, and Fellow of Wallace India/Ancient India and Iran Trust at Cambridge (September 1986 to February 1987). He Taught part of the course on South Asian Archaeology (Prelim, and Part II) at the Faculty of Oriental Studies, Cambridge, for the Michaelmas term. Life Member, Clare Hall, Cambridge (U.K.).

He was a Member, International Folklore Fellows Association, Turku (Finland).

Member, National Advisory Committee, ASR Centre for Tribal Studies and Research, Dr. D. Swaminathan Research Foundation, Hyderabad (India).

Life Trustee, Gunther D. Sontheimer Cultural Association for the Preservation of Folk Traditions, Pune (India).

Member (2010 - ) of the Sub-Committee on Paleoanthropology and Archaeology of the National Advisory Committee, Anthropological Survey of India (Ministry of Culture, Government of India), Kolkata.

 Member (2010 - ), National Mission on Monuments and Antiquities, State Level Implementation Committee for Andhra Pradesh, Archaeological Survey of India, New Delhi.

Member (1997 - ), Coordinating committee, Environmental Information Systems Centre (ENVIS),  Environment Protection, Training and Research Institute (EPTRI), Government of Andhra Pradesh, Hyderabad (India).

Member of the Executive Council (2004 - 2009), Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya (National Museum of Mankind), Ministry of Culture, Government of India, Bhopal (India).

Member, Executive Council (1998-2001), Indian Council of Historical Research, Government of India, New Delhi (India).

Executive Member (1992-1997), Indo-Pacific Prehistory Association, Canberra (Australia).

Member, Executive Council (2011 - 2014), Indian Council of Historical Research, Government of India, New Delhi (India).

He was a Visiting Professor at the National Museum of Ethnology, Osaka    (Japan), April 15 to 31 July 1996. Tagore National Fellow for Cultural Research (Ministry of Culture, Government of India), New Delhi, September 2010 – 2012. Affiliated to the Archaeological Survey of India (Ministry of Culture, Government of India), New Delhi.

He was a Sectional President of India history congress, South Indian history congress, Andhra Pradesh History Congress, Indian  Folklore Society  ,Folklore Society of of South Indian Languages, Etc : .He was a Editor of Pre and Proto History of Andhra Pradesh Volume. Visited U.K. (January to April 1975). Gave seminars. Studied prehistoric cultural materials in the museums at London, Cambridge and Oxford. Visited prehistoric sites and archaeological monuments. (Sponsored by the University Grants Commission and the British Council.)

 Visited France , the Netherlands,  Greece, Philippines , Cambridge, U.K,  Paris, Nice, France,Khartoum, Sudan , Chiang Mai, Thailand , Melaka, Malaysia , Hanoi, Vietnam , Siem Reap, Cambodia,
       
 It would be a fitting tribute to present him with a commemoration volume.  We, on behalf of the Committee earnestly request you to kindly contribute a research paper for the above volume on any of the following topics.

Scholars are requested to send their papers only by Email Attachment in MS-Word format.    It also facilitates speeding up of the editorial work and help in sending the volume to the press at an early date by the end of October 2016.   We are planning to release this book in the month of January , 2017..
